ROCKFORD — Most high school teams might find themselves shutting down after succumbing to a 20-point deficit in the first quarter, but not the Lady Hubs.

Caught in a deep hole early in Wednesday night’s IHSA Class 3A Regional Semifinal against the Stillman Valley Cardinals at Rockford Lutheran High School, the purple and white mounted a furious rally over the final three quarters but came up a few buckets short, falling by a score of 58-47.

“It just shows everyone how much character they have,” head coach Tony Rowan said after the game. “We’ve been trying to preach being mentally strong throughout the season… We had a few girls battling the flu so were a little slower, and we had a rough first quarter but the kids kept on fighting.”

The sixth-seeded Lady Hubs (11-17) and the fourth-ranked Cardinals (20-9) met just a few weeks ago, with Stillman Valley cruising to a 59-33 victory on its home floor. And after senior Macy Weaver scored 10 of her game-high 20 points to help put the Cardinals up 24-4 after the first quarter, it looked like the rematch would play out similar to how the first encounter went.
