ROCHELLE — Caleb Gould knew the Hubs varsity basketball team had to respond after a tough loss to the Geneseo Maple Leafs on the road this past Friday.

And despite another barnburner inside the main gymnasium at Rochelle Township High School, the boys followed their senior captain’s lead and got back on the winning track with a 67-64 victory over the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers Tuesday night.

“It’s a really big win for us,” Gould said. “Our past couple games have been deflating so to get this one… We have more confidence going forward.”

It was the second time Rochelle (17-6, 8-4 NIB-12) and LaSalle-Peru (14-11, 6-5 NIB-12) met this season, with the Cavaliers rallying to upend the Hubs by a score 77-67 on Jan. 13. A big reason for LaSalle-Peru’s success was senior guard Austin Prybylinski, who totaled a team-high 27 points by making shots from all over the perimeter.

But Rochelle shut Prybylinski down on Tuesday, holding him to just 12 points and forcing the Cavaliers’ role players to step up.

“He’s so crafty,” Hubs head coach Tim Thompson said. “Our goal was just to stay down on him, know where he was on the floor and challenge his deep shots… I thought Kaywan [Palmer], Landon [Griffith] and Caleb did a good job of staying down the best they could and not leaving their feet and fouling him.”
