ROCHELLE — Armed with shovels and hardhats Derrick and April Price, along with their three daughters, broke ground on their soon-to-be built home in a ceremony Sunday afternoon.

Construction will soon be underway at the Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County’s newest home build in Rochelle.

HFH of Ogle County executive director Vanessa White-Broome said the organization is gearing up for the next step, which involves recruiting volunteers to assist the construction or to provide refreshments for the work crew. Workdays are scheduled for Saturdays.

“Weather permitting, by the end of June the demolition, excavation, and basement cement work should be done on this property. Additional volunteers are needed for several projects after that,” White-Broome said. “Volunteers may choose to help with various aspects of the build, furnish breakfast and coffee and/or lunch, or serve refreshments and drinks on the building site.”

“The Price family was excited to participate in this kickoff event,” White-Broome said. “They said they are ready and eager to dig in and get started building their new home.”

Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson expressed his gratitude to Habitat for Humanity for building a home in the Hub City, acknowledging it’s a win-win situation for the city as well as the Price family.

“We are anxious to get the project going…I’m very happy for the Price family, they’ve got this opportunity and have been awarded the project,” Olson said. “Habitat for Humanity is a great organization…they do projects all over the county.”

HFHOC helps families realize their dream of home ownership. Through the organization the Price family will have a no-interest loan, which gives them the affordability to own their own home.

Volunteers needed

White-Broome said people with all skill levels are welcome to join and help with the process. Community members, businesses and organizations are asked to donate food or their time to help serve refreshments on workdays.

“We are also looking for individuals to tape and mud the drywall in this home when we reach that stage,” White-Broome said. “Skilled workers are also needed in several aspects of the build who are willing to work with volunteers and lead a crew.”

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Vanessa White-Broome at 815-440-6598 or Gail Tuttle, volunteer coordinator at 815-494-2114.
