A new layer of art

ROCHELLE –– Elementary students may be out of school for the summer, but that is not stopping a small group from missing out on art class. This week the RTHS art department, lead by teachers John Dobbs and Beth Mock, is hosted RTHS after school art.
Camp art was open to students entering first through sixth grade and 24 students packed the art rooms.
After school art sessions included 3-D Sculpting and mixed media. The sculpture class gave young artists a chance to work with clay and other sculpture materials and an opportunity to express themselves in all dimensions. Mixed media combined drawing, painting and collage giving students the opportunity to creatively select media and experience a multitude of art elements.

This summer during the mixed media class students are working on projects that involve multiple parts or layers.
This is the 14th year RTHS has offered after school art giving grade school children an opportunity to be creative outside of their normal classroom.
Mock explained the students create a different project each day building on the skills they learned previously. RTHS art students assist the teachers in working with the young artists. Each year the students work on new projects allowing the aspiring artists to return summer after summer.
Mock explained her favorite aspect of summer art is seeing the students’ excitement. Each day they come to camp ready to start a new project and are excited for whatever they are working on.
