MALTA — Emergency personnel from around the area were called to Kishwaukee College Wednesday morning for a possible fire in a classroom.

The fire scare was caused by a mechanical issue in one of the school's air conditioning units located on the roof.

"One of our air handling units had a belt that over heated and melted, and then you had the melted rubber and smoke being blown down into the whole B wing of the building," explained David Dammon, executive director of campus operations.

The only classes for the day that were cancelled were ones that took place during the evacuation. Once the all clear was given from the fire department, all classes located in the B wing of the building were moved to other rooms and resumed accordingly.

Since there are no windows in the building that open to the outside it took school officials nearly two hours to air out the smoke by opening as many doors as possible. School custodians continued cleaning out the B wing so that classes can resume as scheduled on Thursday.

There were no injuries reported from the incident and the only damage done was to the air conditioner belt and motor unit. 

Even though it caused a slight delay, school officials are very pleased with how everything was handled. 

"It is always nice to see that our systems work appropriately and everyone followed the procedure and got out of the building and the fire department had a great response," Dammon added.

Creston, Steward and Rochelle departments were called to assist.
