Anniversary celebration planned for RACES

“If we touch one human soul, look how much better our Ogle County and our world would be.” — Pete Pascua

It has served as a place of refuge, a place for those needing temporary shelter in a time of emergency. The place — formerly the Rochelle Area Community Emergency Shelter (RACES), currently the Rochelle Area Community Emergency Services, is celebrating 30 years of assisting those in need with an event.

The event is on Friday, June 22 and will include drop in tours from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the facility located at 300 Cherry Avenue.

There will also be celebration cake and punch from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Teen Town, 101 Eighth Ave.

Pete Pascua, the facility’s director, will make brief remarks at 5:15 p.m.

Pascua, together with wife Gloria, have helped thousands of people over the years.

“We address the physical, emotional, social, financial, and spiritual challenges of humanity from a global perspective, because we are just one world,” said Pascua in an April 2016 interview. “It’s a matter of sharing blessings that we have in life while we are still alive.”

The Pascuas have always done their best to accommodate any individual or family in need and many times in the past have shared dinner with residents when the facility was a shelter.

The Pascuas and their facility have been on the receiving end as well from volunteer organizations, individuals, and families wanting to offer services or a cooked meal.

“The name changed and we have expanded our services but it’s the same mission,” Pascua said. “We extend our invitation to everyone, please attend.”

Adding, “It is the unified effort of the total community that made it possible to flourish. It’s a blessing for everyone. In essence, our place is a holistic home for all humanity.”
