Baseball: Freeport rallies to beat Rochelle

Pretzels score three seventh-inning runs to edge Hubs 5-4 in Saturday matinee

FREEPORT — The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team fell just short of snapping its four-game losing streak on Saturday, with Freeport scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Hubs 5-4 in nonconference action Saturday afternoon. Rochelle (5-11, 4-8 Interstate 8) will begin its home-and-home conference series with Kaneland on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Senior Nate Burdin took the mound for the Hubs, throwing six and two-thirds innings and holding the Pretzels to two earned runs. Three Rochelle batters recorded two hits including Burdin as well as seniors Andy Buskohl and Owen Angell, who combined for three RBIs.

Mason Lei put the Pretzels ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, slapping an RBI single to score Maddux Shockey. Rochelle took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, where Angell sent an RBI single up the middle before Buskohl scored on an outfield error. Shockey tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing Ryan Coon home on an RBI groundout.

RBI doubles from Buskohl and Angell gave the Hubs a 4-2 advantage in the top of the seventh inning, but the Pretzels wouldn’t be denied in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three two-out runs to steal the nonconference win. Zach Arnold walked and Coon singled, putting two Freeport runners on base before a fielding error and a steal of home tied the score at 4-4. A passed ball on a dropped third strike allowed Shockey to score the winning run for the Pretzels.
