Baseball: Hubs sweep Sandwich with road win

Alfano, Lloyd combine for one-hit shutout in 10-0 victory

SANDWICH — The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team completed a two-game sweep of the Sandwich Indians on Tuesday, winning 10-0 and extending its Interstate 8 Conference streak of three straight victories. Rochelle (5-6, 4-4 Interstate 8) will face Morris on the road Wednesday.

Senior Braden Alfano threw the first two innings, striking out four batters without allowing a hit. Senior Josh Lloyd entered in relief, hurling three innings with one strikeout and one hit allowed. Senior Eric Briseno led off the top of the first inning with a home run, putting the Hubs ahead 1-0 before Alfano reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on an error for another Rochelle run.

The Hubs added four runs in the top of the second inning to surge ahead 6-0. Alfano brought Briseno home on a sacrifice fly before senior Owen Angell belted a two-run double to plate seniors Nate Burdin and Andy Buskohl, who both reached on hit-by-pitches. Junior Colton O’Rorke capped off the frame with an RBI single up the middle that scored Angell.

Rochelle sealed the victory with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-run lead. Angell walked and scored on a passed ball before Lloyd sent an RBI single through the middle to score junior Noah Lara, who had singled earlier in the frame. Senior Forrest Gerber reached base on an error and scored on a passed ball two at-bats later for the final run of the game.
