SYCAMORE — The Rochelle varsity baseball team completed its two-game sweep against Sycamore this week, topping the Spartans 8-5 on the road Thursday evening to increase the team’s winning streak to five games and improve to 9-2 on the season. Seniors Johnny Beck and Cody Johnson combined for 13 strikeouts on the mound during the win.

The Hubs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Brandon Johnson singled and advanced on Beck’s double before both runners scored on a two-run single from junior Ethan Etes. Senior Louie Mancinas added an RBI single to plate junior Gavin Ansteth, who walked earlier in the frame.

Sycamore earned one run back after a double and a Rochelle error in the bottom of the first inning. Ansteth walked and scored on Cody Johnson’s RBI double to left that gave Rochelle a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Spartans tied the game 4-4 with three runs on two singles, two HBPs and one walk in the bottom of the third inning.

Beck broke the tie with a two-run triple down the right-field line to put the Hubs ahead 6-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Two innings later, Beck sent a solo homer over the right-center field fence to give Rochelle the 7-4 advantage in the top of the sixth. The Spartans cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning before senior Zach Bernardin slapped an RBI infield single to score Johnson in the top of the seventh inning.
