DIXON — The Rochelle varsity baseball team sent four pitchers to the mound against Dixon on Tuesday, but the Hubs were unable to locate the strike zone, walking nine Dukes over six innings thrown and conceding their late lead to fall by a final score of 4-3. Rochelle dropped to 15-7 overall with the loss.
Dixon totaled four singles in the bottom of the first inning to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead over the Hubs. Rochelle recorded one single in each of the next three innings, but the purple and white were unable to score any runs until the top of the sixth inning. Senior Noah Knight singled and scored on an error to cut the Dixon lead to 2-1.
Senior Andrew Johnson sent a two-out single to left before junior Ethan Etes singled and senior Hayden Jones walked to load the bases. Johnson also scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2, and senior Brandon Johnson singled up the middle to plate Etes and give the Hubs a 3-2 advantage.
Rochelle couldn’t hold the lead, however, as the Dukes walked five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to score two runs and go ahead 4-3 entering the seventh inning. Knight singled in the seventh inning for the Hubs, but the senior was caught stealing for the final out of the game. Despite the nine walks allowed, Rochelle’s pitching staff conceded only four hits.
