ROCHELLE — A fire that apparently started in electrical box in the basement was extinguished quickly by Rochelle Fire Department personnel late Thursday afternoon.
No one was injured and there was little damage done to the residence at 303 Eighth Ave. in Rochelle.
According to Rochelle Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville, the occupants of the home stated there had been electrical problems throughout the day and fortunately they realized a fire had started in the basement and called for help immediately.
"They either smelled smoke or heard something and called us," Sawlsville said after the fire was put out. "The fire started in the electrical box and then caught some items on the floor on fire, but it was contained pretty much to the basement."
Sawlsville said there is some smoke damage in the basement, but nothing in the upper floors of the rental home.
"We were able to put it out quickly and we didn't have to use much water, he added. "The structure is safe, but there is no power at this point until the electrical issues can be repaired."
