MALTA — Betty L. Plapp, 92, of Malta, passed away peacefully at Kishwaukee Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017 surrounded by her family. The former Betty Lou Koch was born in Elgin on Aug. 20, 1925 the daughter of the late David and Francis (Bowen) Koch. On June 23, 1962 in Elgin, she was united in marriage to Elvin E. Plapp who survives.
Betty grew up in Elgin and graduated from Elgin schools. Upon graduating from high school, she worked at Abbott Middle School as the school secretary. While working at Abbott, she enjoyed socializing and traveling with her friends in the Double Four-Leaf Clover Club. Wanting to further her education, she enrolled in Northern Illinois University where she earned a degree in Business Education and went on to earn her Masters degree in Secondary Education.
She taught business classes at DeKalb High School until 1963 when she had her first son, Larry. Betty was very active in her community and held various leadership roles in Home Extension and PTA.
Shortly after marrying Elvin, the newlyweds began building their life farming near Malta. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, and hosting family events. Betty was the catalyst in bringing her entire family together and above all enjoyed time with her children and grandchildren. She was very active in her church, Northwest Malta United Methodist Church including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and United Methodist Women. Betty truly enjoyed her time volunteering at Kishwaukee Hospital with the Kishwaukee Auxiliary.
Betty is survived by her husband of 55 years, Elvin; two sons, Larry (Kathie) of Delavan, Wis., and Rick (Gina) of Carmel, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Megan Plapp, Audrey and Evan Plapp. Preceding Betty in death were her parents and brother, David Koch.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 15 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. A celebration of life service will be held at Malta United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. with a short visitation preceding the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
