Junior player looking to build on promising sophomore season

Confidence has enabled Sergio Guevara to continuously improve over his last two seasons with the Rochelle Township High School boys bowling team. As a sophomore, Guevara rolled well enough to earn a spot on the varsity roster and take home Most Dedicated Bowler honors.

Now an upperclassman and an experienced competitor, Guevara will be taking on a leadership role with the Hubs this winter. In addition to upgrading his equipment, Guevara said his consistency and mental toughness motivated him to find his mark more often and score higher during his first varsity season than he did with the JV team as a first-year freshman.

“I felt that I bowled a lot better than I did as a freshman and I improved a lot overall,” Guevara said. “My consistency was there and I felt more confident as a bowler. I want to improve my overall average this year and maintain the consistency I showed before everything shut down. I think having a positive attitude has a lot to do with showing leadership and being a good role model. When your teammates see that you have a bad attitude, it affects the whole team.”

Guevara’s sophomore season with the Hubs peaked during a home victory against Geneseo. During the match, which was Rochelle’s second-to-last of the season, Guevara recovered from two rough games and rolled a career-best 266 to help the Hubs defeat the Maple Leafs for their only win of the season. Guevara will be looking to carry his strong finish into this season.

“Last year, I thought I did a lot better at finding my mark and consistently throwing the ball where I wanted to,” Guevara said. “This year, I want us to place better and perform better in the conference than we did last year... Having a positive attitude reflects better on everybody overall because everybody’s in good spirits when we’re staying positive. When your teammates see you have a bad attitude because you’re not bowling well, it reflects badly on the team.”
