ROCHELLE — Two strong games including a match-high 246 helped Rochelle senior Tyler Johnson lead the varsity boys bowling team to its first conference points of the season when the Hubs faced LaSalle-Peru at T-Byrd Lanes on Thursday.

The Cavaliers won the overall series by a final score of 3,230-3,111. However, the Hubs took the final two games over LaSalle-Peru to take 4-of-10 available conference points in the match. Johnson topped 200 twice and finished with a team-high 634 series for Rochelle (0-2).

“I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot over my four years with the team and I’m looking forward to making this my best season so far,” Johnson said.

LaSalle-Peru started the match strong with a decisive 1,120-977 victory over Rochelle in the first game behind Kyle Jordan’s 233 and Dylan Wyzgowski’s 213. Johnson paced the Hubs with 178 while seniors Brady Shank and Dallas Driver added 175 and 171, respectively.

Rochelle bounced back to edge the Cavaliers in the second game (1,047-1,031) to even the match at two points each. Johnson’s 246 led the way for the Hubs, and Rochelle received solid scores from both Shank (193) and junior Logan Ortega (192).

“I feel like I’m able to stay loose,” Johnson said. “Whenever I’m feeling my shot I don’t really tense up and it makes me feel really comfortable on the approach. It makes me feel confident which is really great for bowling because it’s a very mental game.”

The Cavaliers finished the third game strong, but they weren’t able to overcome an early deficit as the Hubs held off LaSalle-Peru to take the game 1,087-1,079. Driver rolled an individual-best 233 game for a 577 series while Johnson added 210 and Shank bowled 192 to end his night with a 560 series. Landen Miller led LaSalle-Peru with 235.

Rochelle will return to the lanes next week for matches against Sterling and Geneseo. The Hubs will face the Golden Warriors on the road Wednesday before returning home and hosting the Maple Leafs on Thursday at 4 p.m.

“I think we’re just as good as we were last year,” Johnson said. “As long as we keep working and practicing on our weaknesses, I can see us going past regionals like we did last year and possibly moving on to the state level if we can throw some pretty good games.”
