Boys Bowling: Hubs edge Oregon in season opener


Every pin counts as Rochelle sneaks past Hawks 3,116-3,111

MT. MORRIS — The Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team needed every pin during Monday evening’s nonconference season opener against Oregon at Town & Country Lanes. Despite conceding losses in two of the three games on Monday, Rochelle scored a large enough victory during the second game to edge the Hawks 3,116-3,111 in the final series total.

Sophomore Logan Frye rolled a team-high 575 series for the Hubs (1-0), who travel for an Interstate 8 Conference road match against the Sycamore Spartans on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Junior Jonathan Alanis totaled a 557 series and senior Evin Odle fired a 548 series.

Oregon took the early lead on Monday, winning the first game 1,042-997 behind 203 from Brandon Rowe and 193 from Stylar Klapp. Junior Christian Thorne scored a 195 for the Hubs in the opening game against the Hawks, while Alanis rolled a 198 and Frye followed with a 190.

Rochelle dominated the second game 1,076-970 to surge ahead in the series score. Three Hubs eclipsed the 190-pin threshold including Odle (199), Frye (197) and Alanis (190). Rowe led the Hawks with a 204 in the second game before shooting 197 in the third game to finish with a match-high 604 series.

Oregon won the third game 1,099-1,043 and landed five pins short of winning the total series. Frye (188) and Odle (183) led Rochelle in the third game.
