Boys Bowling: Hubs strike down Sterling to stay unbeaten

Rochelle moves to 3-0 with 3,224-3,010 victory on Thursday
ROCHELLE — An unbeaten start to the 2023-24 season continued for the Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team on Thursday, when the purple and white scored their third consecutive win. Senior Jon Alanis fired a 591 series, while sophomore Andrew Powell landed one pin behind with a 590 series as the Hubs rolled over Sterling 3,224-3,010 in nonconference play at T-Byrd Lanes.
Rochelle (3-0, 1-0 Interstate 8) will include a busy opening week with a nonconference home match against Oregon on Friday evening. The Hubs took all three games during Thursday’s meet, holding off the Golden Warriors for a 1,015-993 win in the opening game. Junior Logan Frye rolled a 184 to lead Rochelle in the first game, while sophomore Levi Waddle added a 181.
Waddle followed with a series-best 202 in the second game, where the Hubs extended their series lead with a 1,074-1,009 victory. Powell threw a 193 and senior Sam Tracey contributed a series-best 188 to help the Hubs secure the middle game. Rochelle saved its best effort for last, dominating the third and final game 1,135-1,008 to clinch the nonconference sweep of Sterling.
Alanis shined with a series-best and match-best 260 during the third game, rolling strikes over each of his final five frames. Powell fired a series-best 214 and struck out during the 10th frame to help lead the Rochelle side in the final game. Frye totaled a 181 to conclude the match with a 536 series, while Waddle finished with a 528 series in the win over the Golden Warriors.
