ROCHELLE — Seniors Brady Shank and Tyler Johnson were hitting their marks when the Rochelle varsity boys bowling team hosted Sterling at T-Byrd Lanes on Thursday.

Shank dominated over his first two games, shooting 254 and 245 before cooling off with 207 in his final game for a team-high series score of 706. Shank became the first Rochelle player to score over 700 this season, and his efforts helped the Hubs win 3,176-2,995 and improve to 4-6 on the season. Johnson rolled 679 over three games with a top score of 256.

“I mainly stood on the right side of the lane the whole time and I was keeping the same form throughout the match,” Shank said. “It’s usually hard for me to keep my form consistent, but I was really consistent today. I was picking up my spares which was big, and I don’t think I would’ve scored over 700 if I didn’t pick up my spares.”

Rochelle started strong in the first game, topping Sterling 1,095-1,009 behind Shank’s 254 and Johnson’s 225. Senior Dallas Driver added 195 for the Hubs, while Carter Schlegel and Andrew Doughty led the Golden Warriors with 216 and 210, respectively. The Hubs cruised over Sterling in the second game, winning 1,094-960 behind 256 from Johnson, 245 from Shank and 212 from senior Nick Stevens.

“I feel like I’m throwing my strike ball fairly well,” Johnson said. “My main focus has been picking up spares because I’ve been struggling on my spares for most of the year, and I know that I can really improve my game if I pick those up. It’s definitely a confidence booster to win a match before our tournament this weekend.”

While Sterling took the third game over Rochelle by a score of 1,026-987, the Golden Warriors were too far back in the series total to claim the victory. Cabot McLaughlin rolled 233 and Schlegel added 202 for Sterling, with Shank shooting 207 and Johnson adding 198 for the Hubs. Driver recorded 189 for a final series score of 526. Stevens finished with 490 for Rochelle, and sophomore Keith Holland totaled 440.

“Bowling obviously isn’t as big of a sport as basketball or football, but beating Sterling in general is a pretty good feeling,” Shank said. “I feel like we’re doing pretty good with what we have. I think we all have some things to work on, and we all need to come together during meets and in tournaments to shoot well.”
