Powell, Frye average over 200 as Hubs lose 3,412-3,290

ROCHELLE — Junior Logan Frye and sophomore Andrew Powell each averaged over 200 pins during the Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team’s match against Oregon on Friday. Powell led the Hubs with a 648 series, while Frye followed with a 638 series as the Hawks held on to hand Rochelle a 3,412-3,290 loss. The Hubs (3-1, 1-0 Interstate 8) face South Beloit on Tuesday.

Rochelle entered Friday’s match having won each of its first three matches of the season. The Hubs looked primed to add another victory to their streak after dominating Oregon 1,185-1,049 during the first game, where Frye fired a series-best 247 and senior Christian Thorne rolled a series-best 214. A 245 from Brady Davis and a 232 from Matthew Stahl were the high scores for the Hawks, who bounced right back with an 1,192-1,005 win over Rochelle in the second game.

“I’m really happy with the way everybody started the season,” head coach Jim Lyles said. “We have three kids averaging in the 190s and another kid approaching the 180s. I think all of our kids are capable of averaging 190 or 200. I thought most of our kids stayed up, even when they threw bad shots. They stayed focused and that’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

Powell threw a 209 to lead the Hubs in the middle game, while Frye and senior Sam Tracey each rolled a 183. After Oregon claimed the overall series lead in the second game, the Hawks sealed their team victory with an 1,171-1,100 win in the third and final game. Powell recorded a series-best 235 and Frye scored a 208 for the Hubs, while Davis fired another 245 to finish with a match-best 734 series. Oregon's Gavvin Surmo totaled a 674 series behind high scores of 264 and 256.
