Boys Soccer: Walters shooting for 20-20 senior season

Hub midfielder looking to command Rochelle offense

Zane Walters has waited patiently for the opportunity to shine at his natural attacking position in the midfield. After totaling a team-high 19 assists for the Hubs this past season, Walters will have the chance to fully prove himself as a rising senior and four-year varsity soccer player.

An Interstate 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention this past season, Walters became a starter as an outside midfielder, chipping in six goals and helping the Hubs to a 13-8 record. A reserve over his first two seasons at Rochelle, Walters has raised his individual expectations for this fall, as he’ll be shooting to not only exceed 20 assists, but score over 20 goals as well.

“I thought I held the midfield position and moved the ball pretty well last season,” Walters said. “I’ll be playing my natural attacking position this year, so I feel that I’ll continue to have those assists and score more goals. I thought we played alright last season. We were above the .500 mark which is good, but not great. We played well as a team last season, but I think we can play a more fluid game and win the conference championship this season.”

Walters will be one of two All-Conference honorees set to return in the midfield next season, which should bode well for Rochelle’s 4-3-3 formation and pace of play. Whether it’s through tough practices or matches, Walters said the adversity he and his teammates have faced over the last few seasons will have them well prepared to come back stronger this fall.

“We always find ways to get through adversity and we become closer as a result,” Walters said. “I feel that we can play a prettier form of soccer this season, and I feel that we can be less direct with the ball and get more players involved… I think our goals are achievable, but it’ll take a lot of practice and hard work to reach them.”
