ROCHELLE — The Rochelle varsity boys tennis team took eighth place with nine total points in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Varsity Championships on Monday. The Hubs (4-19 overall) will gear up for the IHSA Class 1A Rochelle Sectional beginning Friday afternoon.
Seniors Hector Garcia and Emilio Nava took sixth place at No. 1 doubles. The Hubs fell 2-6, 1-6 against Yorkville’s Samuel Clough and Briggs Krempski in the opening round before defeating DeKalb’s Caleb Hoffman and Santana Juarez 7-5, 6-1 in the consolation round. Garcia and Nava faced Morris players Nolan Robbins and Matt Grant for fifth place, losing 2-6, 0-6.
Seniors Diego Lopez and Caden Manning finished seventh at No. 2 doubles. The Hubs fell 1-6, 4-6 against Yorkville’s Zack Nauman and John Gruber in the opening round before losing 2-6, 1-6 in the consolation round to Ottawa’s Sam Barron and Regan Linde. Manning and Lopez won the seventh-place match over DeKalb’s Robert Ray and Zachary Kasczka (6-2, 5-7, 10-7).
Senior Alex Galambos and junior Gabe Nava took eighth place at No. 3 doubles. The Hubs lost 4-6, 4-6 against Sterling’s Jonas Hicks and Matthew Valentino in the opening round before falling 2-6, 2-6 in the consolation round to DeKalb’s Dan Le and Eric Torres. Nava and Galambos fell in the seventh-place match against LaSalle-Peru’s David Humilde and Chris Garcia (3-6, 6-3, 6-10).
Junior Sean Flanagan finished eighth at No. 1 singles. Flanagan lost 0-6, 0-6 against Sterling’s Dillon Nitz in the opening round before falling 1-6, 2-6 to Ottawa’s Logan Olszewski in the consolation round. Flanagan faced DeKalb’s Emrys Draper in the seventh-place match, losing 2-6, 2-6.
Freshman Jason Zheng placed seventh at No. 2 singles. Zheng fell 1-6, 1-6 against Geneseo’s Griffin Tracey in the opening round before losing 2-6, 2-6 in the consolation round to DeKalb’s Dayton Warden. Zheng won the seventh-place match over Morris player Austin Shell by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.
