Boys Tennis: Singles success leads to win over Freeport
Rochelle scores 6-3 nonconference victory behind five singles wins
FREEPORT — The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team continued its nonconference success on Wednesday, securing a 6-3 win over Freeport behind five singles victories. Rochelle (11-6, 1-4 Interstate 8) will host its season finale with Newman Central Catholic on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Senior David Wanner scored a 10-4 win over Owen Helm at No. 1 singles, while seniors John Green and Nolan Fonfara locked down victories over J.C. Herrera and Caden DeJong at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Green took down Herrera 10-7 and Fonfara beat DeJong 10-5.
Juniors Parker Lenkaitis and Jimmy Chavez secured the team victory with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles on Wednesday. Lenkaitis defeated Diego Robles Sanchez 10-6 and Chavez outlasted Sam Viverous for an 11-9 win. Freeport’s lone singles win came at No. 2 singles, where Rochelle senior Owen Haas took three games in his 3-10 loss against John Helms.
Green and Fonfara notched Rochelle’s doubles win against the Pretzels, with the duo defeating Herrera and DeJong 10-5 at No. 2 doubles. Freeport took the final two matches, with Lenkaitis and freshman Mark Green falling just short in a 9-11 loss to Viverous and Robles Sanchez at No. 3 doubles while Wanner and Haas fell 5-10 to Helm and Helms at No. 1 doubles.
