ROCHELLE — For the second time in three years, local golfer Thomas Brennan walked away with the championship trophy at the annual Fairways Golf Tournament this past weekend.
Eight players took the field for 54 holes of two-day tournament action, with Brennan and local golfer Tim Duncan finishing their first 18 holes tied at 70. But Brennan followed up with 18-hole totals of 68 and 69 to take a commanding lead over the competition and win the championship flight with a score of 207.
“Any time you get a chance to win another club championship, it feels good,” Brennan said. “All the guys out there keep track of how many they’ve won in the past, and it always feels good to add another one… We had a smaller turnout but it’s always good to win.”
Jon Woeppel finished second with a 223, while Rochelle Township High School golfers Noah Griffith (227) and Garrett Glosser (234) took third and fourth place, respectfully. Duncan turned in a final score of 230 to claim the “A” flight crown, with three golfers (David Cartwright, Ed Troha and Jacob Rippentrop) finishing tied for second at 240.
“I played really well to start off but there were ups and downs all weekend,” Duncan said. “I played with a great group of guys and I had a lot of fun.”
Brennan made his jump in the nine holes following his first round. He said his driver was a key reason for his success this past weekend, and while he admitted his putting could have been better, he was happy to overcome a difficult course layout.
“I hit the ball great,” Brennan said. “I didn’t make as many putts as I would’ve liked… The course was set up to be about as hard as it can be. The tees were all the way back and there were some tough pin locations. I was happy to shoot how I did.”
