ROCHELLE – A multi-family apartment building located on Cherry Avenue in downtown Rochelle caught on fire Monday afternoon.

The Rochelle Fire Department received the call of a building with smoke coming out of the window with one occupant possibly inside at 12:16 p.m. The building on fire is home to three different families and two of the families could not identify if the resident in the burning apartment was home or not.

Rochelle Fire Department and Police Department then began working to locate the individual.

“We looked all around the building and did not find him and he was eventually located by the Rochelle Police nowhere near the burning building,” explained Dave Sawlsville, Rochelle fire chief.

The fire started in the upstairs apartment and did not spread to any other portions of the building, but the upstairs apartment suffered major fire damages and the rest of the building experienced some smoke and water damage. There were no injuries that resulted from the fire and no other surrounding property was damaged.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the fire department estimates the total cost of damages to be around $30,000. Two individuals will have to be displaced due to damages to the property.

Assisting the Rochelle Fire Department was the Ogle-Lee Fire Department.
