ROCHELLE — Two donations were presented recently to the Rochelle Township High School Key Club and Kiwanis Golden K’s bottle cap donation program to bring park benches to the community.

Mike O’Malley presented a $1,500 donation on behalf of Northern Illinois Disposal employees and Mayor John Bearrows presented a $1,500 check on the City of Rochelle’s behalf.

In Rochelle, donated plastic bottle caps are collected, sorted and bagged by Kiwanis Builders Clubs at Kings School, Creston School and Rochelle Middle School before being transferred to the collection shed where RTHS Key Club members do further processing. 200 pounds of bottle caps and $350 are required for a bench. Golden K delivers the bottle caps and pays for the bench and assembles and installs it.

Possible future projects include a blue line bench for the Rochelle Police Department and a red line bench for the Rochelle Fire Department.
