City of Rochelle awarded grant

ROCHELLE — The City of Rochelle received news it has been awarded a grant of nearly $285,000 for a sewer lining project within the Meadowbrook subdivision.

The news came last week from the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) after it announced several grants have been awarded throughout the state. Each year the state receives appropriation funds from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development’s Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, distributed through DCEO. The funds may be used for various projects including public facilities and improvements.

The funding is going to be used to line about 4,000 feet of sanitary sewer on Springdale Drive, Sunnymeade Drive, Short Court, and Fairview Drive. Those low-lying areas have been experiencing increased flows during rain events.

Last August the Rochelle City Council approved a resolution to pave the way for the grant application along with a financial commitment of about $92,000 from the Rochelle Municipal Utilities’ Water Reclamation Capital Outlay account.

“The total cost for the sewer lining for the project is about $354,000 compared to about $1 million for sewer replacement,” said Adam Lanning, Superintendent of Water/Water Reclamation.

Lanning said he anticipates getting the grant funding after the necessary environmental clearances in the next month or two, followed with the project bids in the summer.

“We will bid the job in the summer, likely June or July. This will be a fall project,” Lanning said. “The project will take somewhere between two and three months from start to finish.”
