CRESTON — Creston trustees voted to waive building permit fees for residential construction amounting over $15,000. Village trustees unanimously approved the resolution, which will extend through February 2022, during the monthly board meeting Tuesday evening.

Village Trustee Mike Kerns proposed the resolution, which reflects a similar action taken by the Rochelle City Council during its second February meeting this past week. Kerns said waiving the building permit fees will encourage more building and construction projects in the village.

“I was impressed that Rochelle stepped up and did that,” Kerns said. “I think it’s a great thing for the city and I think we can incentivize people to move forward with more projects here… I think we should be motivating and trying to help people in that way.”

Village Engineer Kevin Bunge also updated the board on the Safe Routes to School project. Bunge said the Illinois Department of Transportation will be contributing an additional $33,000 in funds for the project, which has been bid out at a cost of $191,500. IDOT will provide $189,000 in total state funding for the project, which is expected to be completed later this year.
