GENESEO — Weather cancellations have made the 2018 campaign challenging for the Rochelle cross country program, but Lady Hub senior Katherine Bakken showed no signs of slowing down when both Rochelle teams traveled for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Championship on Saturday.

Bakken was the lone Rochelle racer to medal in Saturday’s competition, finishing 11th out of 58 varsity girls with a time of 19:53.8 to lead the Lady Hubs, who placed seventh out of nine teams with 206 points. Junior Britney Baez placed 37th with a time of 21:46.1 while senior Anne Hickey took 46th with a time of 23:10.0.

Only three Hubs competed in the conference championship. Junior Tucker Louis finished with a time of 18:31.0 and junior Santi Cordoba clocked in at 19:10.1. Saturday was only Rochelle’s seventh team competition of the season, as many events have been cancelled because of thunderstorms or flooding from rain.

“I thought the course and the conditions were more difficult than I was used to,” Bakken said. “But I thought I was able to stay physically and mentally strong. I was able to stay with the girls who were a little bit ahead of me. I think focusing on my goals has allowed me to stay prepared. Working with my team and pushing myself in practice has helped me remember what it’s like to compete.”

Rochelle will return to practice this week before traveling for the IHSA Class 2A Belvidere North Regional which begins Saturday, Oct. 20 at Spencer Park. The girls will race at 10 a.m. before the boys begin their competition at 11 a.m. Qualifiers will advance to the IHSA Class 2A Woodstock North Sectional at Emricson Park on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Bakken will be seeking to reach sectionals for the third time in her high school career.

“I really need to remember that this is my last season and I need to give everything that I have,” Bakken said. “I need to focus on where I want to be which is at the state meet.”
