STERLING — Temperatures were barely above freezing Saturday morning, but the Rochelle cross country team battled through the cold weather and turned in a strong performance in the annual Sterling Invitational at Hoover Park.

Seniors Santi Cordoba and Tucker Louis led the Hubs in the varsity boys race, with Cordoba taking 51st with a time of 17:28 and Louis finishing 91st with a time of 18:27. Senior Seth Gould placed 100th with a time of 20:02 for the Rochelle boys, who placed 14th as a team.

Sophomore Josue Huerta took 31st with a time of 18:24 in the fresh-soph boys race, where the Hubs took 14th. Huerta was one position away from medaling in the event.

“This certainly was our coldest race of the year (34 degrees at start), but that did not hinder most of our athlete's performances,” head coach Mark Zilis said. “Santi ran his 3 miles only 1 second off his season's PR and was 1 minute and 31 seconds faster than the Rock River Run two weeks ago on the same course. Tucker ran 38 seconds faster than at the Rock River Run.”

Senior Britney Baez represented the Lady Hubs in the varsity girls race, placing 45th with a time of 20:57. Sophomore Sara Johnson led Rochelle in the fresh-soph girls race, taking 29th with a time of 22:09 and earning a medal for the sixth meet in a row. The Lady Hubs were 12th in the fresh-soph race. Rochelle will compete in the Interstate 8 Conference Championships at Morris this Saturday.

“Our girls team also showed significant improvements from over two weeks ago,” Zilis said. “Sara's performance earned her a medal for the sixth meet in a row, which is a significant achievement.”
