Cruisers spreading cheer

ROCHELLE – Four local non-profit organizations gathered at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle on Thursday afternoon to receive donations from the Hub City Cruisers Car Club.

The Rochelle Rescue Mission, Focus House and Pegasus Special Riders each received a $500 donation while the Rochelle Community Action Network received a donation of 100 brand new toys to be used for their annual Christmas shopping trip which was held Thursday night.

“We bought all of the toys for C.A.N. and are donating a check to each of the other organizations from the money that we earned throughout the year,” explained Paula Combs, Hub City Cruiser treasurer.

The Community Action Network raised enough funds this year for each of the kids to receive a $75 gift card to be used during the trip. On the trip, the kids use most of the gift cards’ value on new clothes and boots. The toys donated by the Hub City Cruisers are used to make sure that each of the kids still receive a new toy, even if they have no funds left.

Once the kids arrive at the church to go on the shopping trip, they get to choose a winter coat of their choice to keep, get to choose a toy, meet Santa Clause and even get a homemade spaghetti dinner from which most of the ingredients have been donated as well.

Once the trip is over, if there are any winter coats left, they will also be donated to a separate local non-profit organization to be given out to other people in need.

“If there are any coats that are left over, Carolyn Brown from The Kitchen Table will come by tomorrow [Friday] morning to pick them up and hand them out to customers at her pay what you can café,” explained Michelle Pease, C.A.N. project leader.
