STEWARD — At Steward’s annual summer celebration held on Aug. 4, village president Hugh McKiski recognized Mildred Danekas for her many years of service by presenting her with a plant for Kissing Rock Garden in her honor.
She did not run for office this year, perhaps marking the end of her long tenure. This nonagenarian has served as village president and also village trustee for many years. She has given wisdom and excellence to the village. She served as the first female president and was highly respected.
While she was president, loose dogs and mischievous children were issues. To address the canine issue, she convinced the board to hire a dog catcher. She became involved in a Lee County program to provide for the children. Through it, she obtained recreation equipment, then she personally supervised the activities.
Her high standards, willingness to dig deep, and conviction of the importance of service for church and local government have helped make Steward a great place to live.
