CRESTON — The Daughters of the American Revolution’s Rochelle Chapter, which has participated in the Wreaths Across America program at Rochelle and Oregon cemeteries, is pleased to announce a further expansion to its sponsorship program to include Woodlawn Cemetery in Creston.

The chapter has been highly successful in honoring all veterans buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery and Daysville Cemetery, with abbreviated ceremonies and grave specific sponsorships at Lawnridge and Trinity Cemeteries, also in Rochelle; and will seek the community’s assistance in adding support to the new expansion.

The mission of the Wreaths Across America program is to remember, honor and teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more the 2,500 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave, the Wreaths Across America program encourages them to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life.

Wreaths may be sponsored online or through the mail at a cost of $15 each, with a deadline of Nov. 30. To sponsor online, the public is invited to visit Rochelle Chapter’s Wreaths Across America page at https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/IL0136P, using the dropdown menu to select from the cemeteries Rochelle Chapter is sponsoring (St. Patrick’s, Lawnridge, Trinity, Daysville or Woodlawn) and select how many wreaths to sponsor. To sponsor by mail, the public is invited to visit Rochelle Chapter’s webpage at https://ildar.org/chapters/rochelle/pages/Wreaths.html and download the mail-in form for their preferred cemetery. The mailing address is included on the forms.

Those wishing to turn in sponsorship forms locally instead of mailing, can do so by contacting the following:

St. Patrick’s, Lawnridge, and Trinity Cemeteries in Rochelle: Lydia Roberts, email: [email protected].

2022’s official Wreaths across America Day is Dec. 17, with the theme “Find a way to serve.”  To accommodate multiple local cemeteries, Rochelle Chapter anticipates holding local ceremonies over two days with schedules to be announced at a later date. Volunteer participation by individuals, youth and adult groups is encouraged and appreciated. Ceremonies will include the placing of ceremonial wreaths to honor veterans of each of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Merchant Marines, and POW/MIAs; followed by wreath placement at the individual veterans’ graves.
