Deputies make several warrant arrests

On Jan. 11, Melissa Alumbaugh, 29, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County Warrant for failure to appear. Alumbaugh was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond and will appear in court on Feb. 25.
On Jan. 11 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies and the Franklin Grove Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries on Lowden Road about one-quarter mile south of Stone Barn Road in rural Franklin Grove. A white Mazda passenger car driven by Michael Chavera, 49, of Dixon, was driving northbound on Lowden Road and a red Mazda passenger car driven by Frank Castaldo, 28, of Byron was driving southbound. Both vehicles collided nearly head-on, rolled over at least once and came to a rest in the east ditch of the roadway. Chavera was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ogle County coroner. Castaldo sustained only minor injuries and declined medical attention. The accident remains under investigation.
On Jan. 11 at approximately 5:59 a.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle vs. bicyclist with an injury. After investigation, deputies learned a Chevy Equinox driven by Jack Schutten, 87, of Dixon, was traveling northbound in the 1,000 block of South Daysville Road. John Barnhart, 54, of Oregon, was also traveling northbound on Daysville Road with working flashing front and rear lights on his bicycle. Barnhart was also wearing a reflective vest. Schutten then struck the rear of Barnhart’s bicycle causing him to be thrown off. Barnhart was transported to Mercy Health Hospital by Oregon EMS for minor injuries. Schutten was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Jan. 12
On Jan. 12 at approximately 8:21 a.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a single vehicle accident with an injury in the 1,000 block of East Illinois Route 64. After investigation, deputies learned Rachel Obrien, 22, of Rochelle, was traveling eastbound on Illinois Route 64 in a 2009 Hyundai Accent. Obrien then lost control on the snow covered road and traveled into the north side ditch where she struck an embankment. Obrien was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries.
On Jan. 12 at 7:34 p.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies along with Rochelle EMS/ Hillcrest First Responders responded to the area of Illinois Route 251 at Powers Road for a three vehicle crash with unknown injuries. After an investigation, it was determined a 17-year-old male juvenile was attempting to turn his Nissan truck west onto Powers Rd. from Illinois Route 251. The truck struck a Chevrolet passenger car traveling southbound on Illinois Route 251. After being struck, the Chevrolet was pushed into a Ford pickup truck that was waiting at the stop sign on Powers Rd. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported by EMS to Rochelle Community Hospital for non life threatening injuries.
