Senior Hub wins 800-meter run

OREGON — After completing the 800-meter run in under two minutes at the Kaneland Varsity Prep Invite two weekends ago, Rochelle senior Matthew Drendel bested his time yet again when the Hubs competed in the Oregon Classic this past Friday at Oregon High School.

Rochelle finished fourth overall out of 20 teams, with Drendel taking first place in the 800-meter run with a state-qualifying time of 1:57.75. Drendel also placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, and senior teammate Andrew Myers took third with a clearance of 5-10.

Matthew’s senior brother Michael Drendel turned in another solid performance in the pole vault, winning the event with a height of 11-6. Drendel also recorded the Hubs’ best distance in the lone jump at 17-9 ½, and sophomore Benjamin DaCosta’s leap of 34-6 in the triple jump was 9 inches away from his previous best.

Senior Dylan Papke totaled Rochelle’s best heave in the shot put (42 feet), while junior Austin Tracey’s toss of 82-6 in the discus was the Hubs’ longest throw on the day. Senior Levi Johnson finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.98, and senior Jake Rodriguez ran a 17.77 in the 110-meter hurdles for eighth place.

Rochelle’s 1600-meter relay team clocked in with a third-best time of 3:35.10, led by the Drendel brothers, Johnson and sophomore Eddie Villalobos. The 800-meter relay team landed in seventh place with a time of 1:39.08, and the 3200-meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 9:18.07. The 400-meter relay team (Matthew Drendel, senior Lance Huftalin, Johnson and junior Alex Harvey) was the best on the day, finishing second with a time of 44.82.

Huftalin’s time of 52.92 in the 400-meter dash earned him third place, and his time of 11.70 in the 100-meter dash landed him in fourth place. Freshmen Gyvanziel Quinonez and Santi Cordoba came up big in the distance races, with Quinonez placing eighth in the 3200-meter run (11:01.43) and Cordoba taking ninth in the 1600-meter run (5:13.74). Rochelle scored 72 total points on the evening.
