Lady Hub bowler continuing her athletic career with Cougars

ROCHELLE — Lady Hub senior Katie Dummer was introduced to bowling by her father Steve several years ago, and with the help of many coaches including T-Byrd Lanes owner Dan Wyka and Rochelle head coach Joey Johanning, Dummer took the next step toward continuing her bowling career beyond the high school level this past Friday.

Dummer signed her National Letter of Intent to bowl at Highland Community College on Friday alongside her parents Steve and Tammy, her coach Johanning and Cougars bowling director Jeff Johnson. The senior has been Rochelle’s top bowler this season with several high-scoring efforts including a career-high 760 series against Lisle and a 725 series at Morris.

“I’m excited to continue my passion for bowling while also pursuing my career,” Dummer said. “I chose Highland because it’s close to home and it’s more affordable. I also know a few people who have bowled for them in the past and they all said good things about the program. They reached out to me about bowling for them, not just for academics, which was a game-changer to hear.”

Dummer has reached sectionals twice during her high school career, and she took first place in the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic earlier this season with a six-game series score of 1,246. Dummer also placed second at Sterling’s MLK Invitational with 1,224, and she led Rochelle at the Morris Invitational by rolling 1,198 to finish ninth individually.

“My father introduced me to the sport and I stuck with it,” Dummer said. “Once I started bowling in leagues I had several coaches help me throughout the years… I’m ready to start in the fall and I can’t thank everybody enough for the support they’ve shown me throughout my years of bowling, especially my parents for putting so much time and money into my passion.”

Dummer will be looking for her third sectional qualification when Rochelle battles at the IHSA DeKalb Regional at Mardi Gras Lanes on Saturday, Feb. 3. And when her high school career reaches its inevitable conclusion, Dummer said she looks forward to the new experiences she’ll have with new teammates and tournaments at Highland.

“Once I entered high school coach Johanning was my biggest go-to for help and I can’t thank him enough,” Dummer said. “My challenges will probably be keeping my head up during my rough patches and keeping myself on board with juggling life priorities.”
