ROCHELLE — Only 15 seconds went off the clock before Indian Creek scored its first goal against the Lady Hubs varsity soccer team when the two nonconference foes squared off at Rochelle Township High School on Monday.
Early deficits have troubled the Lady Hubs over the first handful of games this season, and Monday’s game was no different, as the Timberwolves took a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes of play and scored six first-half goals in an 8-0 victory over Rochelle. The Lady Hubs played Indian Creek to a 1-1 tie last season, but this year’s matchup was all Timberwolves, who dropped Rochelle to 1-4 overall after the eight-goal win.
“They look more polished than they were last year,” Lady Hubs head coach Chris Blevins said. “They moved the ball around really well and they had a lot of speed up front… We’re still trying to connect as a team and we’re probably going to make some changes on the field tomorrow. We’re seeing some things position-wise that may lead us to moving some players around.”
Four Rochelle players including juniors Olivia Piloni, Sarah Craven, Emily Engelkes and Gillian Higby recorded one shot on goal each in the first half. Sophomore Viviana Belmonte totaled all nine of her saves in the first half as well, and after leaving the game with an upper-body injury in the second half, sophomore Kaitlynn Ost filled in with three saves in net.
“We need to get on the field and be ready to play immediately,” Blevins said. “We’ve been working on getting more offside traps and we were able to do that today. We’re working on maintaining our lines defensively, and halftime we talked about we can do less running around if we hold our lines.”
The Lady Hubs will host Ottawa for their first conference game of the season on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
