ROCHELLE — Residents in the Rochelle area awoke to severe thunderstorms and heavy rains early Friday morning. Between 4 and 6 inches of rain fell within a four hour period inundating sewers and flooding streets.
City engineer Sam Tesreau said 10 streets became impassable as a result of the flash flooding. Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of Ogle, Lee, LaSalle, and Winnebago counties and all expired by mid-day.
“We had flooding in some areas that haven’t occurred before,” Tesreau said. “We also had many properties experience flooding due to being in a low lying area.”
Tesreau said by 3 p.m. about 90 percent of the flooding had receded. He expected Kyte Creek to continue to rise over the next 24 hours.
Emergency crews responded to a structure fire on Cottonwood Court due to a lightning strike, as well as a transformer fire on Ill. Rte. 38.
As the area continues to dry out Friday, residents were facing a heat wave over the weekend with temperatures expected in the low to middle 90s with a heat index topping 100 degrees.
