Eggenburg ready to lead flag program

ROCHELLE — Tuesday marked the beginning of the 2017 Rochelle Junior Tackle flag football season, and perhaps nobody was more excited to see the city’s young athletes take the field than first-year coordinator Amie Eggenburg.
A passionate football fan whose son Kellen competes in the flag program’s Arena League, Eggenburg is learning quickly as she gears up for her first year on the job.
“I really love football,” Eggenburg said. “If there wasn’t anybody to take over, the program may not have continued or been as successful as it’s been in the past... It’s really important to keep the kids active, and if they can find an outlet they’re good at and continue with it, they will build off of it not just in sports, but in the classroom and when they get older.”
The flag football season runs for eight weeks, and games are played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Helms Field. The program is divided into three leagues, with the Arena League consisting of preschoolers and kindergarteners and the Jungle League comprising of first and second-graders. The “NFL” League features third and fourth-graders, the program’s oldest players.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the kids get it,” Eggenburg said. “That first ball they catch or that first flag they pull… They get so excited and their faces light up… Watching them continue to grow and build up their confidence so they can  do something they enjoy.”
