ESMOND — For 125 years the small, white wooden Esmond United Methodist Church, tucked away in the northwest corner of DeKalb County, has served the spiritual needs of the small village and its surrounding neighbors.
It has been the site of many baptisms, marriages and funerals for several generations of families and serves as the social center of the village. It has become known as “The little church with the big heart.”
Since 1935 the church has served as a starting point for part-time student pastors to practice their preaching and pastoral skills. At other times, the church has been lead by retired pastors as they look to cut back their schedules and ease into retirement. Both types of pastors are greeted with open arms and enthusiasm. Currently, Rev. David Rogula, a retired pastor, is serving the church.
To celebrate their 125 year history, the church is holding a special service on Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. The Bishop Sally Dyck and DeKalb District Superintendent, Young-Mee Park will be participating in the service as many memorial gifts are dedicated. Following the service a celebratory meal will be shared.
All are welcome to join in this special service.
