eSports: RTHS grad Childers signs with Kishwaukee College

Kishwaukee College will have two former Rochelle Township High School students entering the battlefield when the Kougars debut their competitive eSports program next fall.

RTHS graduate Austin Childers became the newest member of the Kishwaukee College eSports team after signing with the Kougars this past week. Childers, who’s currently studying electrical engineering at the college, will play League of Legends for the Kougars. Kishwaukee College will be one of many NJCAA schools playing in the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE).

“When Kishwaukee introduced the eSports program, it was perfect timing for me,” Childers said. “There are a lot of things I enjoy about League of Legends, but I mostly enjoy the champion diversity, the itemization and the way that every match is unique. I’m currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, and with my education, my goal is to make notable contributions to modern technology through electrical solutions.”

The NACE features multiple games for student-athletes to play including Overwatch, Paladins, Smite, Rocket League, Counter Strike, League of Legends and Fortnite. Seasons are split into the fall and the spring, with League of Legends running taking place in the spring. Childers will be joining forces with RTHS alum Josafat Brizuela, who signed with the Kougars this past month.

“I started playing video games in 2004 with my older brothers and his friends,” Childers said. “What I enjoy most about gaming is that it’s a great way to destress and disconnect from reality for a period of time. My favorite kind of games are first-person shooter and multiplayer online battle arena games, which I enjoy most due to the competitive aspect and having to develop strategies for each match. I’m looking forward to becoming a better player, both individually and as a team, and I’m looking forward to bonding with everybody in the program.”
