STERLING — Rochelle Township High School sophomore Bryan Garza will represent the Hubs at the IWCOA Fresh-Soph State Championships in Springfield this coming weekend. Garza placed third at 170 pounds during the sectional competition in Sterling on Sunday.
Garza won two straight matches by fall against LaSalle-Peru’s Drew Verway and Burlington Central’s Colin Wrobel to reach the championship semifinals. Garza lost by 9-2 decision to Dixon’s Hunter Pate in the semifinals, but the sophomore took down Geneseo’s Will McKelvain by 5-0 decision before beating Wrobel a second time by 6-3 decision for third place.
Also competing at the sectional from Rochelle were Ivan Pineda, Grant Thompson, Keegan Davis, Wade Samp, Diego Escobar, Zeke Horn, Victor Jefferson and Ethan Albers.
