Girls Basketball: Feuerbach sisters too much for Lady Hubs

Monstrous first quarter propels Sycamore to 75-23 win over Rochelle

SYCAMORE — Spartan sisters Kylie and Faith Feuerbach were difficult for the Lady Hubs to contain Friday evening, when the Rochelle girls opened an Interstate 8 Conference doubleheader that preceded the boys basketball game between both schools.

The Feuerbachs combined for 15 first-quarter points, nearly four times as many as Rochelle totaled as a team. Sycamore exploded from the 3-point line to start the game, building an enormous 29-4 lead and riding the wave to a decisive 75-23 win over the Lady Hubs, who dropped to 2-8 overall with the loss. The sisters finished with 31 total points.

“I’m going to enjoy seeing how many 3-pointers they made throughout the game,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “They made 15 or 16 of them and about half of those were in the first quarter. They had nine kids in their program who put up over 10,000 shots during the summer and we had only one. It goes to show how much work those girls have put into their program.”

Although the first quarter was brutal for the Lady Hubs, there were still some bright moments throughout Friday’s tough conference battle. Sophomore Lucy Bunger capped off a four-point second quarter with a turnaround mid-range shot at the buzzer. Trailing 44-12 after halftime, sophomore Josie Lundquist went to work in the third quarter, scoring all five of the team’s points and recording Rochelle’s first seven points of the second half on layups, free throws and mid-range shots. Lundquist ended the game with a team-leading nine points.

“She’s coming off a leg injury and having her in the lineup will be huge for us,” Rowan said. “The last time she was really able to go was in February. She’s only going to get better throughout the season. The score doesn’t judge how well we played. I thought we pressured where we needed to pressure after the first quarter, and we boxed out well even though we didn’t finish possessions as well as we would have liked. I thought we moved the ball pretty well.”
