Girls Basketball: Guilford slows down Rochelle

ROCHELLE — A tough third quarter in which the Rochelle varsity girls basketball team mustered only four points made any attempts at rallying difficult when the Lady Hubs hosted Rockford Guilford on Saturday.

Trailing by nine points at halftime, the Lady Hubs were unable to find the basket during the third quarter, as the Vikings increased their lead to 15 points and coasted to a 57-37 victory over Rochelle. The Lady Hubs (3-7 overall) will face Stillman Valley on Tuesday.

“We played extremely well in the first half,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “Guilford was able to bank in some 3-pointers and it was a little demoralizing at times. The kids continued battling and we had some softer legs from playing the night before.”

Guilford built up a 15-7 lead after the first quarter before both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter to make the score 29-21 at halftime in favor of the Vikings. Rochelle once again rallied behind senior Abby Lundquist, who scored a team-high 20 points in the game and drew enough contact from Guilford defenders to finish 12-of-20 from the free-throw line.

But the Vikings held Lundquist to 3-of-16 shooting from the field, and Rochelle shot just 29 percent from the field (10-of-34). A bright spot was senior Makenna Ferrari, who scored four points on two made shots with two rebounds. Freshman Zoey Tabor added three points and five rebounds, while five players scored two points including juniors Lilly Portzen, Gabrielle Harding, sophomore Afi Gati and freshmen Sylvia Hasz and Lucy Bunger.

“We’re really trying to get the ball out of Abby’s hands so we can get her into open spaces,” Rowan said. “The more time she has the ball in her hands, the more often defenses will key onto her. It’s going to take a couple of other girls being able to handle the ball without turning it over so we can get her some better looks.”

Guilford led 39-25 after three quarters before outscoring the Lady Hubs 18-12 the remainder of the way. Both Hasz and Gati grabbed five rebounds, and Lundquist led Rochelle with four steals.
