ELGIN — The Rochelle Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team finished its season in the NCJC Tournament at Prairie Knolls on Saturday. For the first time in 14 years, the girls took home first place by defeating Belvidere South in a defensive struggle 12-10.
Kendyl Darby led the Royals with 12 points in the championship game and Jayden Johnson and Betty Flores played amazing defensive throughout the tournament. In the semifinals, the girls beat a very physical and athletic DeKalb Huntley team, who was also the No. 1 seed going into the tournament, 34-21. Darby led the way with 12 points, while Riley Doyle and MaKayla Lara each added seven points.
Jayden Johnson chipped in with five points and Madi Steder added three points. The A team finished the year winning its last five games. The Royals finished with a 12-9 overall record. The A team includes Madi Steder, Jayden Johnson, Arline Villanueva, Kendyl Darby, Riley Doyle, MaKayla Lara, Cassidy Vincent, MaKayla Ludwig, Flor Magana, Betty Flores and Mariana Saldana.
The B team finished the year with a 7-8 record and was led offensively by Samone House, Flor Magana and Ella Carson. On the defensive end, Billie Bonilla and Jocelyn Cervantes led the team in steals and were instrumental in the team reaching seven wins. The B team includes Samone House, Billie Bonilla, Kayla Ankney, Zoe White, Bridgett Ramirez, Giselle Garcia, Charlotte Simmons, Ella Carson and Sienna Seebach.
