ROCHELLE — Winter sports are in full effect after the Rochelle girls bowling team hosted its first practice of the season at T-Byrd Lanes on Monday. The Lady Hubs will open the 2019-20 campaign against Kaneland on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.

“We have a young team this year,” head coach Joey Johanning said. “We have only two upperclassmen with one senior and one junior. The rest of the girls are freshmen or sophomores. We have a group that we’ll be looking to grow over the next few years.”

Rochelle will return two talented sophomore players including Alyssa Schwanert and Alyssa Mickley, who was the only Lady Hub bowler to qualify for the IHSA Sectional last season. This winter will be Rochelle’s first run as a member of the Interstate 8 Conference.

“With any high school bowler, I think spare shooting is the key,” Johanning said. “Players can lose anywhere from 10 to 15 pins when they miss one spare. I’d like to see the girls continue to grow there, and repetitions are key. We need to put the work in practice to make sure we can pick all of our spares up.”

The Lady Hubs will conclude the season with the Interstate 8 Conference Championship at Mardi Gras Lanes on Feb. 4, 2020 before beginning the IHSA Regional on Feb. 8. Rochelle will have multiple varsity roster spots to fill after the departures of Aubrey and Autumn Headon.

“We have a number of girls who are bowling competitively for the first time,” Johanning said. “They’re basically brand new to the sport and it will be fun to watch them develop over the next few months and help grow the program.”
