Rochelle freshman completes first-ever sectional tournament

ROCKFORD — Tough lane conditions presented challenges for Rochelle freshman bowler Alyssa Mickley when she represented the Lady Hubs in the IHSA Rockford (Jefferson) at Don Carter Lanes this past Saturday.

Rolling for the first time as an individual this season, Mickley shot 448 over her first three games with a high score of 176. Mickley recorded 413 over her final three games with a top score of 161 to finish with a six-game series score of 861.

“Overall, it was a great experience to have even though I was very nervous,” Mickley said. “I hope I get to experience it again throughout my high school bowling career. I didn’t perform how I would have liked to, but I did try my best. I had to switch to my old bowling ball in the middle of the fourth game because my new ball wasn’t working well for me.”

While Mickley wasn’t with her teammates at the sectional tournament, she did receive some support from her coach, Joey Johanning, as well as former Lady Hub bowlers Katie Dummer and Mickley’s sister Brittany, who made signs to cheer Mickley on from the stands. Machesney Park (Harlem) won the sectional with a team score of 6,320, while Harlem’s Rebecca Hagerman earned the individual title with 1,362.

The sectional tournament ends the Rochelle girls bowling season.

“It was very different for me to not have teammates there to support me, but I did have other individuals bowling on my lanes and we all supported each other,” Mickley said. “This experience will definitely help me next season because I know now that I’ll have rough days but that shouldn’t frustrate me.”
