Girls Soccer: Geneseo overwhelms Lady Hubs

Maple Leaf offense too strong as Rochelle falls 9-0

ROCHELLE — There weren’t many things for the home fans to cheer about when the Rochelle varsity girls soccer team hosted a strong Geneseo squad on Wednesday.

The Maple Leafs sustained their high-octane offense throughout the first half, scoring four goals over the first 17 minutes of play and finishing with a 7-0 advantage over Rochelle at halftime. With a shortened clock to begin the second half, Geneseo tacked on two more goals, and the Lady Hubs struggled to muster any offense, falling 9-0 to drop to 2-3 overall.

“I thought we worked hard on defense but Geneseo has a really good team,” head coach Brad Male said. “They keep the field spread out, and I thought we were able to attack them a little bit, but they helped us see and understand the things we need to continue working on.”

Geneseo pressured Rochelle from the start, scoring goals in the third and ninth minutes to go ahead of the Lady Hubs 2-0. The Maple Leafs added goals in the 12th and 17th minutes before scoring in the 21st, 22nd and 38th minutes. Nearly every Geneseo score came from through balls, both up the middle and down the sidelines, where the Maple Leaf attackers simply outran the Rochelle defensive wall. Senior Olivia Piloni had the only Lady Hub shot on goal in the first half.

“We told them not to get discouraged,” Male said. “We want to continue improving and we want to use that game to help us continue on the path we’re going down. We want to continue looking for each other and creating better opportunities for ourselves.”

Geneseo’s second-half scores came in the 53rd and 56th minutes. Sophomore Vianey Perusquia had one shot on goal in the second half, and Rochelle finished with two for the game. Junior Viviana Belmonte recorded nine saves for the Lady Hubs.
