ROCKFORD — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team bounced back from a fourth-place finish in the Interstate 8 Conference tournament this past weekend, defeating Auburn 5-2 on the road Tuesday evening in nonconference action.
Freshman Makayla Lara led the Lady Hubs (7-9, 4-2 Interstate 8) with four goals, while junior Mavi Avila added one goal in the victory. Three players recorded assists in the match including Lara, Avila and senior Madison Ost. Sophomore Danica Ward totaled two saves.
Rochelle outshot Auburn 24-5 and 20-4 in shots on goal. The Lady Hubs took a 1-0 lead when Ost assisted Lara for her first goal of the match during the 15th minute. Auburn found the equalizer in the 26th minute and the score remained tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes. The Knights gained their first advantage of the match early in the second half, scoring in the 55th minute.
Trailing 2-1, Rochelle responded with four unanswered goals to seal the nonconference road victory. Lara converted an unassisted goal during the 62nd minute before Avila found Lara for her third goal of the evening during the 68th minute. Lara completed the superfecta with her fourth goal in the 72nd minute before assisting Avila’s goal during the 74th minute.
