Lady Hub senior Anna Guevara said there have been times this season where she’s been more emotional than normal. Whether it’s through watching her teammates play well or hearing teammates cheer as she works through her varsity singles matches, Guevara said her third and final year with the Rochelle tennis program has brought her a lot of fond memories.
“What I love most is seeing my teammates play well and watching them cheer me on,” Guevara said. “I’ve gotten emotional at times watching them because it’s my last season and I’m really going to miss playing tennis here. I had usually done dance, but I wanted to do something different and I showed up to tryouts as a newbie. But I went on to make a lot of new friends. I’m going to miss all the music, singing and dancing on our bus rides home from meets.”
Originally a dancer, Guevara went out for the tennis team her sophomore year. She competed with the JV squad during her first season before spending both her junior and senior seasons with the varsity team. After earning Rochelle’s No. 2 singles slot in 2019, Guevara has accepted the challenge of facing the opposing team’s best players at the No. 1 singles position this fall.
“Playing No. 1 singles is a tough spot but I think I’ve played well,” Guevara said. “It’s definitely hard, especially during difficult weather, but I love the challenge. I enjoy singles more because I feel like I can manage my points and my scores without having to worry about anybody else… I’m a really competitive person, so playing singles has made tennis even better for me.”
Guevara secured a singles win in her first match of the season against Harlem, and she’s fought several close matches throughout the 2020 campaign. Now a senior and one of the more experienced varsity players, Guevara said she’s looking to be a role model for her teammates.
“I think my serves have improved a lot from when I started playing, and I think I’ve been better on managing where the ball will go next,” Guevara said. “I know I can do better in a lot of areas. It’s about making the right shots so I can score more points for my team… Coach [Lizzie] Cartwright always gives great advice and as a team, we help each other out whenever we can. I always tell myself to keep moving forward and focus on the next point and keep my head up.”
