Girls Tennis: Lundquist, Young shine at Dixon

Freshmen players earn first varsity doubles victory

DIXON — Lady Hub freshmen Josie Lundquist and MeLisa Young highlighted the beginning of competition for the Rochelle varsity girls tennis team this week. 

Lundquist and Young teamed up to defeat Dixon’s Talia Becker and Jordan Odale in two sets (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3 doubles in Rochelle’s 4-1 loss against the Duchesses on Monday. The victory was Rochelle’s first point in any varsity match this season.

Junior Ruth Gardner fell 0-6, 0-6 against Dixon’s Riley Bally at No. 1 singles while junior Caitlin McMurray lost 0-6, 0-6 to Alexis Sneek at No. 2 singles.

Seniors Jasmine Rissman and Ashlynn Leininger took one game in a 1-6, 0-6 loss against Dixon’s Allison Bay and Mariam Sohail at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Melanie Gonzalez and Sawyer McGee also won one game in their 0-6, 1-6 loss to Emily Tribley and Emma Russell at No. 2 doubles.

Dixon took all three junior varsity doubles matches. Rochelle’s Emma Hicks and Jordin Dickey took a tough 5-8 loss at No. 1 doubles while Riley Flanagan and Anna Guevara fell 4-8 at No. 2 doubles. Mindy Pelayo and Ella Seebach were edged out 5-6 at No. 3 doubles.
