ROCHELLE — Sophomores MeLisa Young and Jordin Dickey gave the Rochelle girls tennis team an early advantage over Mendota on Monday. But the Trojans took four straight varsity points over the Lady Hubs to win the nonconference match 4-1 and drop Rochelle to 2-9 overall.
Dickey and Young topped Mandy Pappas and Natalie Orozco 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to put the Lady Hubs ahead 1-0. Mendota tied the match when Hannah Ambler won 6-4, 6-2 over Rochelle junior Anna Guevara at No. 2 singles, and the Trojans went ahead 2-1 after Eve McDowell and Izabella Nunez edged out Rochelle senior Caitlin McMurray and junior Melanie Gonzalez 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 3 doubles.
Mendota took the final two matches, with Mary DeFore topping Rochelle senior Ruth Gardner 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Rachel Brandner and Ashleigh Collins snuck past Rochelle junior Sawyer McGee and sophomore Emma Hicks 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
